A very happy social and presentation evening was held at the weekend at Thirsk Athletic Club. In a hugely competitive Age Adjusted Championship, involving mostly actual races but also a few virtual runs, Rob Burn and Paul Peacock couldn't be separated and finished on equal points in the men's competition with Alan Simpson not far behind in 3rd place. The amazing Lorraine Hiles won the ladies' Age Adjusted Championship with Trudy Morrice 2nd and Bronwyn Mayo in 3rd place. Bronwyn also won the award of Runners' Runner voted for by members.
In a second competition without any age adjustment, Matt Jones came first in the men's event with Ken Wood 2nd and David Tervit 3rd. Esther Harrison won the award for 1st lady, with Anna Whitham and Kirsty Naylor in joint 2nd place.
Ruth Pollard was adjudged to be the Most Improved lady and Joe Joyce the Most Improved man. Special mention must be made of Duncan Fothergill and David Tervit who, for the second year in succession, completed all 18 championship races. (Winners are calculated on points from the best 10 events. to include a 10k, a short race, a fell race, cross country and a long race, either 10 miles or half marathon, plus any 3 other events.)
The evening was rounded off with some enthusiastic dancing, perhaps to be classified as “cross training”!.
A bitterly cold
morning on Saturday meant reduced numbers at park runs, with only 8 braving the cold, at Fountains Abbey, Northallerton, Millfield and York, none of them dancers from the night before!
