Fell Running
What is Fell Running?
Fell running is a traditional form of off-road running over hills, moorland and open countryside. Routes often include steep climbs and descents, rough ground, mud, rocks and sometimes sections without a defined path.
Fell races range from short, fast events to longer challenges across exposed hills and moorland. Depending on the route and conditions, runners may also need navigation skills and be required to carry safety equipment.
It’s challenging, friendly and wonderfully simple – running over the hills, tackling whatever the terrain and weather throw at you, and enjoying some spectacular countryside along the way.
What is the Esk Valley Series?
The Esk Valley Fell Running Series is a popular programme of fell races held across the North York Moors and Cleveland Hills. The series includes a wide variety of events, from short, steep races to longer challenges over rough moorland, woodland and open fell.
Runners can take part in individual races or compete across the season for individual and team points, creating plenty of friendly competition between local clubs.
The series has a strong community feel and is a great introduction to traditional fell running, with races taking place throughout the year in some of the most scenic parts of North Yorkshire. Thirsk & Sowerby Harriers are regular supporters of the series, both through members taking part and through races including the Gormire Gamble and Hooded Horse.
