What is the Let’s Lift the Curfew campaign?
Let’s Lift the Curfew is about encouraging people to feel more confident being active outdoors after dark. It raises awareness of the barriers and safety concerns that can make runners, particularly women, feel they need to change when, where or how they exercise during the darker months.
Why is the campaign important?
As the evenings get darker, many people feel less comfortable running or exercising alone. The campaign helps start conversations about safety, encourages people to look out for one another and promotes welcoming opportunities to be active outdoors together.
What are Thirsk & Sowerby Harriers doing as part of the campaign?
Thirsk & Sowerby Harriers are holding two free evening running sessions open to all runners who support the Let’s Lift the Curfew message. You don’t have to be a member but we would love you to join if you enjoy the evening(s).
When and where are the TaSH sessions?
The two sessions are:
- Monday 26 October 2026 – 7:00pm, Sowerby Sports Village
- Wednesday 28 October 2026 – 7:00pm, Sutton Bank Visitor Centre
Do I need to be a member of Thirsk & Sowerby Harriers?
No. The sessions are free and open to all runners. You do not need to be an existing TaSH member to take part.
Are there any age restrictions?
Anyone aged between 11 and 17 should be accompanied at the club by an adult with parental responsibility. There is no upper age limit!
Do I have to attend both sessions?
No. You can come along to either session, or join us for both if you would like to.
How much does it cost?
Nothing – both Let’s Lift the Curfew sessions are completely free.
What is the aim of the TaSH events?
As well as enjoying a sociable run together, the sessions are intended to raise awareness of how we can all help make outdoor activity after dark feel safer, more welcoming and more accessible.
What should I wear?
Dress appropriately for an evening run and the weather conditions. Bright or reflective clothing is particularly useful when running after dark, a head torch, and suitable running shoes are recommended.
Do I need to fill in a form?
We will need your name, contact number, DOB, an emergency contact and answers to six questions. If you can print and bring this form with you that would be great, otherwise we will have copies available on the night. Click here to download PARQ Form.
Will the sessions take place in the dark?
Yes. They begin at 7pm in late October, so darkness is an important part of the campaign and the opportunity to discuss and demonstrate safer, more supportive approaches to running after dark.
What is the campaign hashtag?
Use #LetsLiftTheCurfew to support the campaign and help spread its message.
