Many people all over the country, and the world, set out early on a Saturday morning to take part in the free 5k parkrun, but few people are more regular than Gary Wilkinson, who has done no fewer than 50 this year! This week he was at Brighouse where he came a very good 10th out of 155 – quite an early get up to be there for a 9 am start! Usually he's a bit more local, though he's also done events at Glasgow, Liverpool and Edinburgh, to name but a few. A superb effort, Gary.
8 members were among the 247 at Fountains where rain there, and elsewhere, was the order of the day. There were some soggy runners drinking coffee in the cafe afterwards (so much so that staff were wiping the seats as well as the tables after they left!) Numbers were generally down because of the rain, and Bronwyn Mayo came 14th out of 57 at Conyngham Hall, 1st lady in 24.34. Matt Jones was 8th out of 108 at Millfield in 23.30 with the inveterate Rob Burn 11th in 24.40. Clare Gwillam, Christine Burn and Rob Lickley were also at Millfield. Nicky Hawkes was among the 104 at Thorpe Perrow, 67th in 34.52, with Annie Hedger among Harrogate's 162, Martyn Coy on Humber Bridge (63), Allison Whiteley and Craig Atherton at Heslington (216) and even at Bushy there were only 816 instead of the usual thousand or so, where Jason McLaughlin came 366 in 27.04.
RED stands for Run Every Day in December and Duncan Fothergill has taken up the challenge. You must run at least a mile, and perhaps keep a record of your runs – and maybe even support a charity. It stands you in good stead for the overindulgence at Christmas and we wish Duncan good luck in his challenge.
Duncan Fothergill ready for a RED run
Beyond Christmas, it's time for you to consider getting in your entry for next year's Thirsk 10 on March 17th, 10 am, Thirsk Racecourse, plenty of free parking. It's a popular, flat, 10 mile road race, suitable for those chasing a good time and for relative novices to have a go at. A Wheelchair race sets off 15 minutes earlier, and an off-road Fun Run starts at 9 am. Details can be found on the club's website, and entries are at bookitzone.
