Tree Planting Day – All Welcome! 3rd December 2022
Tree Planting Day
Saturday 3rd December. 12 Noon. Virtual Mountain race / Tree planting Project for all to enjoy.
For everyone who ran in the Virtual Mountain Race this past August, there is a tree to plant in your name, but don’t worry if you are not present, your tree will be planted. If you are new to the club and want to take part, this is not a problem. I may even find you a tree. Just ask me nicely and I’ll see what I can do.
Where? Paul and Sarah Goacher’s farm, which is on the left hand side / York road A19, approx. 2 miles out of Thirsk, but before you get to the Bagby turn off.
I will give a demonstration on how to plant a tree at 12.15. A planting scheme / markers will be set out for your arrival. ( I hope ) To get maximum effect from varieties and colours, the trees will be planted in waves so please plant them where asked and not as you please .
You will need warm clothing, boots/ wellies, gloves etc. It could be wet but the trees need to be planted.
It is best to work in teams of two’s and three’s with a spade to each group. I have a couple of spare spades but it’s best if you bring your own. A small post is to be knocked in for each tree. I can bring a couple of post thumpers, but if anyone else has one then please bring it along. If you want to mark your tree then please bring along a permanent pen marker and write your name on the tube surrounding your tree. You can put a label on the tree if you like.
Technical bit: there are 150 trees to plant , 6 x 25 native species selected for colour / flowering at different times of the year. Strong plants of between 40 to 90 cm in height. If we get a group of 15 to 20 people then I’d expect all to be planted in just over two hours.
Christine has informed me this is supposed to be a leisurely and enjoyable task and is to be respected as such. Apparently there are no prizes for those who plant the most.
