NYSD Richmond Old Race Course: Sunday 5th February 2023
next championship race: Knavesmire Parkrun Saturday 18th February 2023
Thirsk 10: 12th March 2023, cyclists required!
Thoughts from Rob If you've not joined us at training this year yet then where have you been? It's February already. The lawns are starting to green up and the winter corn crops look good. Which reminds me! Did you all take part in the Great British bird count last weekend? This year Christine and I were down a bit on goldfinches and sparrows. It was a dry spring last year which meant insects didn't get washed off the top of trees. This is where blue tits feed. Hence, blue tit numbers should have been up. Not at our house they weren't, we only had one. The woodpecker and pheasants turned up too late to be counted. If bird numbers were dramatically down then it may not be due to adverse weather conditions but more due to the increased numbers of cats visiting our garden. There is a woolley black one that comes to mind. It has been warned!!
Advanced warning: The next club championship race. Saturday 18th February 5k parkrun Knavesmire race course, York. 1.5 laps on tarmac. There are no twists and turns , just long sweeping corners. I've not run this one before but looking at the results it's flat and it's fast. Average field size, 400. Average time, 27.00. If you are in good shape then this is the one to go for a pb. If you are new to running or returning from injury then it's also good because it won't get any easier than this. Must do's. Have a look at the map for car parking, toilets and the start. It's also time to talk about car sharing too. You will need to have a huge warm up and get fired up ready to go. Don't waste all your recent training by not preparing correctly. We do it each week at training so you all know what is required. It doesn't matter what you put on strava during training, it does matter once you stand on the start line. Remember to look out for the group photo at around 8.45am. If you're not there by then, then there is a good chance you won't be on it. If you are running this race, are a club member and regularly run parkruns then please make sure you put Thirsk and Sowerby Harriers down as your club on the parkrun portal. This means that at a click of a button Matt can work out all the results and I can keep an eye open and see how you are all running. Last year we had 44 runners at Dalby. We have more attending training this year than last so I would hope we would easily beat this total. Don't forget your club vest. If you don't have one then you need to order one from the club website. I like wearing the club tee shirt in cool weather but if it's mild I'll just wear the vest. If by any chance the event is cancelled (there is still time for snow) then it'll have to be the following weekend.
How much would you do for a friend? A program worth a watch on BBC2 7pm Friday 3rd February. Kevin Sinfield. A wonderful guy.
Final reminder. This weekend you have three choices. Cross country, fell race or stop at home. The choice is yours. I'll be at Richmond.

Update on Awards Criteria for 2023 As discussed at the January 11th Committee Meeting, and agreed to communicate to all Members in this digest, it has been agreed to keep the criteria for 2023 awards the same as 2022, ie:
Awards to be given to first 3 eligible male and female Age Adjusted championship runners, and to first 3 First Past the Post runners. Eligibility and scoring is as documented on TaSH website.
If any runner is in first 3 of both, the FPTP award will go to the next placed runner.
If two runners finish with the same points total in a category based on their 10 best results, the position will be awarded to the member with the highest total points score from all 18 championship races.
Recognition will be given to any Harriers who complete all championship races.
Adult Supervision of junior runners at training sessions This was discussed at the January 11th Committee Meeting: if you bring junior members to training, please note in order to maintain safety of all runners we have agreed that:
A parent can supervise a maximum of 3 of their own children;
If an adult is acting as responsible person, supervising any children other than their own, the maximum is two children. Written authority from a person with parental responsibility (can be electronic, an email to coaches@tasharriers.club) is required.
